- What is a blepharoplasty?: Eyelid surgery is an intricate surgical procedure to correct drooping upper eyelids or under-eye bags (lower eyelid). The aim is to restore an alert, rejuvenated eye area through the targeted removal of excess skin and fatty tissue. Our experience from over 4,000 eyelid corrections performed is applied to every procedure.

- Combinations: Both procedures can be combined with each other as well as with a facelift, brow lift or autologous fat transfer. In previously operated patients, we can aesthetically improve the eye area through (scar) correction.
Do you wish for an more alert, fresher expression?
The eye area is the centre of our non-verbal communication. With increasing age, the particularly thin and sensitive skin around the eye loses elasticity – accelerated by UV radiation, lack of sleep, nicotine, alcohol and stress. Genetic factors also play a role.
On the upper eyelid, excess skin bulges over the lashes and covers the eyelid crease – the gaze appears heavy, tired or sad.
On the lower eyelid, the orbital septum – a fine layer of connective tissue that holds the fatty tissue in the eye socket – slackens over time. When it drops, the typical bulges arise that we perceive as under-eye bags. These are clearly distinct from simple dark circles – dark areas of skin caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood.

Upper eyelid lift: liberation for the gaze
The correction of the upper eyelids (upper blepharoplasty) is one of the most effective and at the same time low-risk procedures in plastic and aesthetic facial surgery – with a great aesthetic effect for a comparatively short procedure.
- The indication: Are you bothered by your appearance because excess folds of skin press on the lash line, cover the eyelid crease or restrict your field of vision? A genetic predisposition to drooping eyelids can also be operated on at a younger age.
- The procedure: Under local anaesthesia with twilight sedation, we remove exactly the necessary amount of skin and – if required – a fine strip of the underlying muscle to redefine the eyelid crease. Existing fat pads are removed in a targeted manner or can be reinserted directly to treat dark circles elsewhere (autologous fat). Finally, the wound is sutured under microscopic magnification with the finest threads and covered with small adhesive strips. The procedure takes about 60 minutes.
- The result: The eye appears visually opened, the gaze becomes radiant and open again. Scars in the eyelid crease are barely visible.
- Aftercare: After about 5–7 days, the adhesive strips are removed and the sutures taken out. Any swelling subsides quickly; special lymphatic drainage accelerates healing. We recommend cooling the eyes regularly, refraining from alcohol and avoiding anything that strains the eyes.
- What you should consider before the procedure: At least two weeks before the operation: no blood-thinning medication (aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac), no vitamin supplements, no nicotine or alcohol, no sleeping tablets, no sunbeds. 1–3 days before the procedure, we recommend a facial lymphatic drainage for optimal preparation. If you suffer from an eye condition, please have a preliminary examination carried out by your ophthalmologist.
Lower eyelid lift: contour instead of under-eye bags
The lower eyelid lift (lower blepharoplasty) is anatomically considerably more demanding than the upper eyelid correction and should be performed exclusively by surgeons with many years of experience in reconstructive surgery. Differences in quality are particularly conspicuous here – literally.
- The indication: Pronounced under-eye bags caused by bulging fatty tissue as well as dark circles or wrinkles in the lower eyelid area that can no longer be adequately treated with minimally invasive methods (e.g. hyaluronic acid injection for mild findings).
- The method – classic: The incision is made directly below the lash line and a few millimetres into the outer eye fold. Skin, fatty tissue and, if necessary, parts of the orbicularis eye muscle are removed – the fatty tissue using radio waves to minimise bruising. Often the muscle must additionally be repositioned upwards, for which we use techniques from reconstructive surgery. The resulting scar lies directly beneath the lower lashes and runs out into a natural skin fold – usually barely visible. The operation takes up to two hours and is usually performed under general anaesthesia.
- The method – scarless (transconjunctival): With suitable findings, access is gained from the inside via the conjunctiva of the eye. The fatty tissue is removed and the outer lid then optionally treated with laser. The decisive advantage: no external scars are created. Whether this procedure is suitable for you is something we clarify in the consultation.
- The result: A smooth, firm transition zone between the lower eyelid and cheek that makes the face look permanently younger.
- Aftercare: The sutures are taken out and the dressings removed after 6–8 days. Eye drops, regular cooling and elevated positioning of the upper body are important for the healing process.
- What you should consider before the procedure: The same preparatory measures as for the upper eyelid lift. In addition: please inform us in advance of any allergies to plasters, ointments or medication. In the case of pre-existing conditions (heart, lungs, thyroid, dry eyes, diabetes), supplementary preliminary examinations are required.
- Operation: Usually on an outpatient basis.
