Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty)
Relief and harmonious proportions
Excessively large breasts (macromastia) can not only represent an aesthetic burden for the women affected, but also lead to considerable physical complaints. Chronic neck, shoulder and back pain, postural damage, painful constrictions caused by bra straps as well as skin irritation in the inframammary fold are common accompanying symptoms. In addition, sporting activities and the choice of clothing can be severely restricted.
Breast reduction, medically referred to as reduction mammaplasty, is an established surgical procedure that aims to reduce the volume and weight of the breast, to reshape and lift it. The aim is to create a breast shape that suits the body’s stature and is aesthetically pleasing, while at the same time relieving physical complaints.
Indications for a breast reduction:
A breast reduction can be medically and/or aesthetically indicated when:
- considerable physical complaints exist due to the weight of the breasts (e.g. pain, postural problems).
- the breast size is perceived as disproportionate to the rest of the body and leads to psychological distress.
- there are restrictions in everyday activities or sport.
- there is a wish for a smaller, firmer and more shapely breast.
The decision in favour of a breast reduction is very personal. At our practice, we attach great importance to comprehensive information and consultation to ensure that the procedure meets your individual needs and expectations.
The surgical procedure of the breast reduction:
There are various surgical techniques for breast reduction, which are selected depending on the size and shape of the breast, the skin condition and the patient’s wishes. Our experienced specialists in plastic and aesthetic surgery master the entire spectrum of modern surgical techniques.
With most procedures, excess skin, fat and glandular tissue is removed. The nipple (mamilla) and the areola are moved into a higher, more aesthetically pleasing position, whereby sensitivity and, in many cases, the ability to breastfeed can be preserved – this is discussed individually in advance. The remaining skin and breast tissue are reshaped to achieve a smaller, firmer and well-proportioned breast.
The incision varies depending on the technique. Common methods are the T-incision (anchor incision), the L-incision or the I-incision (vertical incision). The scars are placed so that they are as inconspicuous as possible and fade over time.
The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia and requires a short hospital stay at our clinic.
After the breast reduction:
After the procedure, a special support bra is applied, which must be worn for several weeks to support healing and stabilise the new breast shape. Drains may be required for a short time to drain off wound fluid. Swelling, bruising and a feeling of tension in the breasts are normal and gradually subside. Painkillers help to relieve postoperative discomfort. Physical rest is important in the first few weeks. Sporting activities and lifting heavy loads should be avoided for about six to eight weeks. Our specialists will inform you in detail about the aftercare and the healing process.
The final result of the breast reduction is visible after a few months, once the swelling has completely subsided and the scars begin to mature. Patients frequently report a marked relief of their physical complaints and a considerable increase in self-esteem and quality of life.
Scientific evidence and individual care:
Breast reduction is a procedure that has been tried and tested for decades and is safe, with high satisfaction rates. The techniques are continuously developed further to optimise functional and aesthetic results. The positive effects on physical complaints and psychological well-being are documented in numerous studies.
