Temporomandibular joint and TMD

Diagnosis and treatment of functional disorders

Disorders of the temporomandibular joint and the masticatory muscles, summarised under the term craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD), can cause a wide range of complaints. These include jaw pain, temporomandibular joint pain, jaw clicking, chewing disorders, restrictions in the movement/opening of the lower jaw, but also headaches, neck and back pain as well as tinnitus. Our practice offers comprehensive diagnostics to identify the causes of your CMD symptoms precisely. Based on a detailed clinical and instrumental functional analysis, we develop an individual, often interdisciplinary treatment concept. This can include conservative measures such as splint therapy and physiotherapy, but also minimally invasive or surgical procedures on the temporomandibular joint.

What makes the difference:

We specifically address the structural particularities of the temporomandibular joint and its possible damage (disc, soft tissue, ligaments, bone, etc.). In doing so, we pursue a concept that restores the temporomandibular joint to its natural function and structure and takes into account the healing and regenerative capacity of the structures. Particularly in the surgical field, this concept is specifically reconstructive (restorative) and restructuring (e.g. disc reconstruction, etc.).

In Switzerland, we are leading experts in open-joint surgery.

Jaw clicking: getting to the root of the causes

A clicking jaw is a common symptom that occurs in many people and does not always require treatment. However, it can be a sign of a malfunction in the masticatory system, a so-called craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD). The causes are often displacements of the joint head or the articular disc within the temporomandibular joint, as well as of the soft tissues (ligaments and capsule), muscular tension or degenerative changes. If the jaw clicking is accompanied by pain, restricted movement or other CMD symptoms, a precise diagnosis by our specialists and by high-quality imaging techniques (e.g. dynamic MRI or high-resolution CBCT) is advisable, to clarify the cause and, if necessary, initiate targeted therapy before further temporomandibular joint pain or long-term damage occurs.

Jaw pain: targeted treatment to relieve you

Jaw pain can significantly impair quality of life and has a wide range of causes. It can originate from the teeth, the periodontium, the masticatory muscles or directly from the temporomandibular joint. Jaw pain is often a leading symptom of craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD). But inflammation, tumours (tissue growths), osteoarthritis (severe wear), injuries or other conditions in the jaw area can also be the cause. Precise diagnostics (in particular imaging under movement) are decisive to identify the source of the jaw pain and initiate effective treatment. Our experts for temporomandibular joint pain and CMD take the time for a thorough examination and develop a treatment plan tailored to you.
