FAQ Botox® and fillers

Aesthetic injectable treatments often raise questions. To give you some initial guidance, we have compiled answers here to frequently asked questions about treatments with botulinum toxin (Botox®) and hyaluronic acid fillers. However, this can and should not replace a personal consultation.

The question “Botox® or filler” or “Botox® vs hyaluronic acid” is central. Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a muscle relaxant. It is used to smooth dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle activity (e.g. frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet). Hyaluronic acid fillers, on the other hand, add volume. They are used to fill static wrinkles (visible even at rest), compensate for volume loss (e.g. on the cheeks, lips) or define contours (e.g. jawline, chin). Often a combination of both procedures is advisable.

The durability of Botox® is individual and depends on factors such as metabolism, muscle activity and dosage. On average, the effect of a Botox® treatment lasts about three to six months. The treatment can then be repeated.

The durability of fillers varies depending on the type of hyaluronic acid preparation used (degree of cross-linking), the treated region and individual factors. As a rule, you can expect an effect lasting 12 to 24 months. With some products and treatment areas, the durability can extend beyond this.

Botox® side effects are usually mild and temporary. These include slight redness, swelling, small bruises at the injection sites or, rarely, temporary headaches. When applied correctly by an experienced doctor, more serious side effects are very rare.

As part of Botox® aftercare, you should refrain from intensive exercise, sauna, sunbeds and facial massages for a few hours after the treatment. Do not rub the treated area or expose it to strong pressure. You will receive more detailed instructions from your treating doctor.

The most common hyaluronic acid side effects include temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or small haematomas at the injection sites. These usually subside within a few days.

Serious hyaluronic acid complications such as infections, allergic reactions or vascular occlusions are very rare when applied professionally by a qualified and experienced doctor. A careful medical history and consultation before treatment are essential. At our practice, we use exclusively high-quality, CE-certified products to minimise the risk.

Yes, a combination of Botox® and hyaluronic acid fillers is often advisable to achieve a comprehensive and harmonious result. Botox® addresses dynamic wrinkles, while fillers correct volume loss and static wrinkles.

The perception of pain is individual. Injection treatments can be associated with slight discomfort. We use very fine needles and can, if necessary, apply topical (locally applied) anaesthetic creams to maximise comfort during the treatment.
